How to tell if alligator leather is real or fake?

I got a pair of gorgeous Ferragamo shoes at a thrift store in Beverly Hills. The outside appears to be made out of alligator, how can I tell if it is real or not?|||on used ones, it's really hard to tell, but if it's that brand, it should be real.|||As far as I've learned from my years selling Ferragamos, I've found that they don't make fake skins in mens but if it is womens, there is a chance it is not real as only some of the womens are genuine skin.
